Isle de Monts Desert is the official name of the island in which most of Acadia is located. The name was given to the island by French settlers who were the first to settle there, other than Native Americans. The English translation of the island is Mount Desert Island, as mentioned on previous pages.
Most of the landforms we see today were made from glaciers thousands of years ago, measuring up ro 9,000 feet thick. The cliffs along the coast are mainly made up of a variety of different kinds of granite, including pink granite. These spots are very popular among rock climbers and cliff jumpers.
Acadia also has a total of 26 mountains within the park, including Cadillac Mountain. Cadillac Mountain is the highest peak on the east coast at 1,530 feet high, and is said to be the first place the sun touches every day in America.
Wetlands make up 20% of the park more inland, and are great places for fishing. They also contain many rare plant species that are found only in New England.
