Although Acadia offers many beautiful sights, rock climbing is one of the most popular activities. Its cliffs offer a wide variety of routes and difficulty levels. For the skilled and experienced climbers, the Otter Cliffs are easy to access and contain more difficult walls. South Otter Cliffs is an extension of the Otter Cliffs and presents an easier variety of walls. These cliffs were also featured in the 2010 Paramount movie "Shutter Island."
If you would like a more memorable experience of climbing, go see the South Wall of Chaplin Mountains. These cliffs are almost completely made of pink granite and give climbers the opportunity to climb up to 300 feet high. Even better, these walls overlook Frenchman's Bay, so your reward once you get to the top is magnificent.
Even though the climbing looks fun, it can be dangerous as well. Acadia National Park requires the use of belay devices and descender, helmets, carabiners, harnesses, climbing ropes, chalk bags, and crash mats. Durable and protective shoes or climbing shoes are greatly encouraged.
